This video reminds me how backwards we have gone in the last 20 years as far as music, and culture.
They purposely brought in people to slam dance and have a mosh pit on SNL in 1982,
meanwhile the Nightclubs that have replaced the ones I grew up with in my city , now follow the cities new rules that outlaw slam dancing or mosh pits because 'they could be dangerous'
Wasn't that they whole point of punk and metal club shows. The danger was half the reason we were all there.
It don't matter which side of the political spectrum you fall on,
there is no more freedom in the USA.
I can’t speak for the US, but everywhere I’ve lived and even now there’s always been at least one bar in a shitty part of town that’s always been the same, the faces change and get younger as do the bands, but the basic thing is the same, it’s a place to get laid, get drunk, get drugs and listen to some music.
Where I live currently there’s an abandoned building in the worst part of town and kids run punk gigs Thurs-Sun nights, they run the power etc themselves from another building. It’s like guerrilla musicfare. It’s a shithole and dangerous, but it’s the same vibe and type of people as it was in the 90s.
People say their freedom is being taken away, but it’s always been the same, you have to fight and put effort into freedom. Part of the DIY culture in rock music is dying, sure you never had a bigger audience for your music, but trying to get that audience to your gigs is another thing. That has to be built on the ground, not online.
