The Eternal General - 04/24 - Unpinned but alive; Atlas/Monsters nowhere in sight; Slash 'Orgy of the Damned' next month

As far as the song "The General", it could be as good as "Estranged" but it doesn't matter. Vinyl, digital, whatever.

If it's not marketable, no one cares. In the 80s, that was songs about shaking your ass and hooking up so you could have kids.

Perhaps is going to be their public swan song. I'd bet good bananas on it.

The music industry nowadays is all about selling makeup, soda, car insurance, and a glimpse of Katy Perry Taylor Swift Billie Eilish's knockers.

Axl is a creepy old man now. The days of him selling Converse shoes are over.

Ask yourself why would I prostitute myself for fortune and shame?

They're living on the fringes of the system. They're lucky they're allowed to do that.

It's all a big club and you and I are not in the big club.

Monkey out.

This is likely because every media outlet that reported it would've been blacklisted or held back from coverage/exclusives, etc.

Many of the old leaks articles from 2006-2008 are no longer accessible.

I will agree the appetite isn't there for new GNR music though.
Even the smaller outlets (AN, Metal Sludge, Blabbermouth, etc) that weren't going to get any access didn't report it.

Yeah.

It's why it got the video treatment and some promotion that first week.

None of their other songs got anything.

Perhaps/General the swan song as they go into hiatus and after they go away for awhile, the big farewell tour that will coincide with the band's anniversary/AFD.

Its always about AFD. Always. Even when it's not, it is. You have to be reminded of it continuously as a fan. In the off chance you forget, they've always got it covered...

Well, I mean lets be objective. We got Absurd (lol) and Hard Skool. Our sample size is tiny.

But that brings me back to my point. It's all marketing. GnR has gotten good press based on two things: the money their tours have made and guest stars like Pink, Carrie Underwood, and the Foo Fighters who are apart of The Matrix, the system.

I'm kind of curious what's going on behind the scenes. I have no doubt the record company doesn't give much of a fuck. Axl not giving up touring profits means they aren't gonna do shit and even if he did, I think he's smart enough to know they really wouldn't do shit. Then again this is the guy that made a handshake deal with Irving Azoff so maybe he isn't so bright. Any way, I wonder if Hard Skool was a testing ground for the record company. Good enough marketing for that besides the absolutely botched release. The mix and choices were shit but it's basically a pandering to the GNR base song.

It probably didn't do great but even if it did well enough, what does Axl have in the tank? Middling songs. No "Better"s or anything upbeat. In a word, nothing that sells.

I'm starting to wonder if they did some sort of survey/research and they figured out the best thing to do is just sit back and collect the money from back catalogue sales/streaming.

The moment GNR did a 180 and started supporting and promoting GH meant there was little need for a new compilation even though most reunited bands do one in the early phase of the reunion.

The discog is so small...and the fact Axl spent 20+ years basically promoting THE album (AFD) essentially made it even smaller.

LLAS - Nobody cares

AFD - The Big Kahuna

Lies - Nobody cares. Patience is on GH

UYI - The 90- 91 craze is lost to history. Nobody cares anymore. NR and YCBM on GH

TSI - Nobody cares.

Live Era - Nobody cares.

GH - Their 2nd best selling album. Even your grandma owns it.

CD - Nobody cares. This is barely canon anymore.

The reunion singles only materialized when ticket sales were in the toilet and they needed to give the media a reason to mention the tour.

If you're UMG/Geffen, the only thing to do in this situation is mirror what the band is doing....nothing while GH and AFD grease the wheels.

It really, really sucks from a hardcore fan perspective.

long post
I think you’re not far off the mark but again the problem is marketing - how do you market Rock In Rio 2001 or House of Blues 2001?

I would guess they’ll continue to launder CD2 tracks via greatest hits type of releases and we’ll eventually end up with a 2 disc very best of which features 1/3 Chinese 1/3 reunion rerecordings and 1/3 stuff like shadow of your love.

One of the stops on the train will be a live era box set of the most desired live shows and they’ll probably launder some New GNR stuff in there.

If it were anyone else I’d say Axl should make a solo album with the rest but he’s content of being king of yesterday rather than has been of today. Not gonna happen.

but if anything was throwing a bone to the fans it was probably the locker leaks. I wish they’d throw another one because that story is still half written and time is dwindling on anyone becoming gracious

You don't. You can't.

Several reasons...

He didn't even market it at the time. Some interesting logos/banners at the time but then what? No follow through. A mini tour consisting of 10 AFD tracks...and then a nearly 4 year hiatus!

It's not really GNR. It's ok to say this now. It's over. It was a supergroup briefly masquerading as GNR.

If we're lucky we'll get the few remaining big guns as singles during the farewell tour.

God willing.

They already have this ready. It was finished for the UYI set but excluded.

Rio

London

Paris

That will be the next box set. If we're lucky.

they’ll probably launder some New GNR stuff in there.

Not a chance.

That can't be marketed as GNR.

Go check the official site. Count all the new GNR merch for sale.

It was all pulled right before the reunion and will never appear again.

Who would buy it? A hundred people look back fondly on the era...and half the arenas were empty. They'd have to use AI to artificially fill out the venue before release.

that story is still half written
Just give me The General now.

Oklahoma, Soul Monster, and Seven as they say farewell and I'm good.

We were never getting all that double-trilogy stuff in the first place...all fantasies from the diary of a madman as he shoved AFD down our throats.

I just want the main course listed above.

Leaked or released. :Classic_Troll:

I'm not even referring to CD2 but of course there's that. I'm talking about CD 2002-2004 and the Andy Wallace mixes of CD.

Of course, I want all of the CD2 iterations from those eras as well but...

I got a new theory.

The General is uploaded by our merry band of bandits on the 27th.

Along with a video that dont suck, and doesn't contain the leaches (Beta Fam, etc)

And pre-order merchandise for an EP

With The General as A-side,

with HS, A💩'd, Perhaps, Atlas Shrugged, and State of Grace.

A month later the

Atlas Shrugged/ Stare of Grace 7" , that is not pre-order, its a live sale that preceeds the EPs ship date

Along with a video for Atlas

😆😂🤣 I know I'm dreaming big

This Will Never Fackin Ever Happen!!!

I think you're on to something.  But what will the merch be for The General?  We need something to compliment a magic 8 ball.

On to something? The General is a B side but he's somehow morphed it into an A side , video, and an EP.

Go big or go home but that scenario is a bit out there.

What if the AFD 5 retire, and they do a reality show about who will be the frontman of a new version of Guns N' Roses that otherwise features Gilby Clarke, Tommy Lee, and Jason Newsted?

The lineup could do with a major overhaul.

AIDS Kills Fags Dead - vocals
Dribbly Sharte - guitar
Tommy Stuson - bass
Piss Shitman - keys & sub bass
Fatt Scrotum - drums

Special guest FRANK RICHARDS on nose trombone
