Red Hot Chili Peppers fans complain that the band is playing too many new songs

I only ever hear complaints about the RHCP concerts.

Are they that shit live?
Never seen them myself but I've always heard they are lacklustre live too, I'm talking from BSSM and on.

If I recall correctly I think they copped a bunch of flak for one of their Big Day Out shows back in the day (anecdotal)

Was it any good? He was a bit weaker during the US 2011 leg than 2010, but some gigs were pretty decent
It was typical 2011. It’s hard to really know how good or bad it was without a YouTube video. Meows on GITR did find a clip a while back. Not the full song. There used to be a video of the full song I think but it’s gone. It’s hard to know how good something really is in the moment. You’re not really analyzing it. I was at the Philly 2011 show and Metlife 2016 shows that everyone says is incredible and I didn’t think it was anything special at the time.

I went to see Neil Young on his Psychedelic Pill tour. He was touring a jam album. He played a bunch of awesome jams. People complained that he didn't play the greatest hits start to finish and instead played material for what he was touring.
I saw him twice on this tour, among the best I’ve seen Neil with the Horse. That was not the consensus around me however. The outro to “Walk like a giant” sent them mental.

I saw them live in June.

Saw GNR last year.

Chilli Peppers are way more entertaining nowadays. Every member is in a great shape and they are delivering great and energetic performances.

Even Kiedis’ singing is much less off than it used to be. My only complaint is that they could play a little longer. But I prefer less than 2 hours of RHCP than more 3+ hours of Mickey Mouse clubhouse.

If it comes to new music - they played about 4 new songs and the rest was all hits. Tbh Black Summer also seems to be a hit now, everyone in the audience was singing along.

I don’t understand lack of communication complains. None of the big acts I have seen in my life spent more than roughly 5 minutes of entire show interacting with audience. Maybe Ozzy but that’s it.

This was the setlist when I saw them back in March: https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/red-hot-chili-peppers/2023/bc-place-stadium-vancouver-bc-canada-33bb34d5.html

For the length of shows they play, that set is basically perfect. I was a bit disappointed they 'only' played 5 new songs but there's nothing I would've replaced.

Modern day Frusciante is what Slash should/could be. I felt like I was watching a legend in his prime even though he's in his 50s. Then there's Slash, drooling all over himself while trying to play as many notes as possible with gravy-coated sausage fingers...

Intetestingly when the peppers last played in Aus there was considerable backlash reported in the media against how long they played and not enough of the old stuff. Even though the tour was to support their new album, the fans just wanted to hear the stuff between Blood Sugar and By The Way. They couldn't care for the new stuff, just the radio hits between those albums.

Its the issue now with legacy bands and GNR is no different. I get why the band wouldnt want to release a new album when you can just play the deep cuts and the radio hits its seems thats all the majority want.

RHCP, along with Metallica, are basically the perfect example of what a legacy band should be. They've kept a lot of fans interested in their new music, most of their shows are still the big hits but they rotate a good amount of fan favourites over the course of a tour. I was stoked to hear Wet Sand and Me & My Friends in Vancouver, at the show after that they played Parallel Universe and Don't Forget Me, the show after that got Suck My Kiss, Blood Sugar Sex Magik and Hard To Concentrate... and so on. There's only like 4 songs that are actually staples in their setlists, but they usually find a good balance between what people at a stadium show want to hear vs what the band actually wants to play.

Who would have thought in the 90s that 30 years later Anthony Kiedis will be a better singer than Axl Rose.

It’s unbelievable.
Anyone with knowledge of the biology of singing. Axl was an anomaly. A freak. The things he could do vocally were absolutely insane. But he's human. Vocal chords can only take so much.

Absolutely i agree about legacy bands who should be releasing new music rather than just doing the greatest hits tour. Metallica fans seem to embrace the new stuff both buying it and being receptive when they hear it live.

Some fans i don't know whether they are the majority or minority seem to be the loudest when complaining about a legacy band like metallica or the peppers not playing more of the old stuff.

Bands like them have enough hits that casual fans expect a pure greatest hits set in a stadium. I like Under The Bridge but I'd take Breaking The Girl, Higher Ground, Easily, Knock Me Down and a few others they haven't played on this tour over that song. If at least half the show is hits, that's good enough for a stadium or arena band IMO.

Side note, a few days ago they did a surprise gig at the opening of a park in Compton. They played 5 hits, invited the audience onstage for Give It Away then did a song with a local rapper. That's fuckin rock n roll, a group of real musicians playing a small gig just because they wanted to play it. I can picture Axl physically recoiling at just the thought of doing that.

Bands can strike a balance between playing new and old songs.

GNR playing Chinese era songs for these past tours is basically the same thing as playing new songs, because most of the fans don't care/haven't heard them. They are for the hardcores. Similar to RHCP playing California Weather Report Love Box or whatever their new song is called.

I'm looking forward to the Axl/RHCP collaboration: California Rolls (Of Fat)

I don’t know if it’s that similiar.

When I saw RHCP playing Black Summer crowd went crazy and everyone was singing with the band.

When I saw GNR playing Absurd, Hard Skool or Better it looked like no one knew what the hell is going on and crowd went dead. It was pretty awkward.
