Recently, a CD from the Chinese Democracy sessions was sold on eBay.

It was from Capitol Studios, titled "String Date Ruff". It presumably had an unheard mix of Prostitute, along with instrumentals. The CD is dated 09/13/02. Steve Churchyard was the engineer.

The seller is located in California and seems to sell a lot of promo CDs from random acts. It doesn't look like they have or had any other CD stuff listed that sold, at least not openly on eBay.

Most interesting is Steve Churchyard being named on here. Does anybody know anything about his involvement with CD? A quick search shows that he has been involved in the past with bands like UFO. It's a name that I don't recall previously hearing connected to the CD sessions.

Capitol Records, LLC, and simply known as Capitol, is an American record label owned by Universal Music Group through its Capitol Music Group imprint.

Shows recoding was done at the same time as the date on cd that was listed on ebay.

Could it be fake ? Sure but it wouldn't have used capitol records on the cd.

Could it be real ? My opinion is absolutely and most likely is real.

@gunsntortillas great find !

Paul Buckmaster put strings on "Prostitute" in July 2002, so this is presumedly from that session

Steve Churchyard was a regular engineer for Buckmaster - they did the strings for "Drops of Jupiter" by Train

Other songs Buckmaster put strings on in July 2002: "The Blues", "There Was a Time" and "Madagascar"

Just looking at the account of the person who had it, I would guess that it is legitimate. They seem to collect and sell promo CDs. They are also located in California, so you can probably come up with all kinds of ways that they might have access to promo discs.

I guess the purpose of the thread is more to catalogue this.

Hopefully, whoever won this leaks the lossless tracks for historical preservation, but I'm not holding my breath.

@Gordon Comstock or @EstrangedTWAT do you want to let them @mygnr know about @gunsntortillas find ? They are once again slacking.

Guys this is not even worth it, If you wanna hear this version just listen to one of the 06 leaked mixes, The 06 mixes are reportedly very similar to this one.

The only thing from that period I'd be interested in would be the Marco Beltrami orchestral instrumental of "Thyme", which was recorded by Beltrami in July 2002 along with orchestrations for "Seven", "The General" and "Leave Me Alone"

The "Thyme" instrumental was supposed to be the opening track of PRL, the follow-up album to Chinese Democracy

Wtf 75 dollars? actually surprised, Looks like it’s been sold

It's not an auction. It was a buy it now. Meaning, the seller could have underpriced it because they didn't know what it was. I'm sure one day someone will get a grenade or red hand cover CD in a similar fashion if it hasn't happened.

The guy is either a collector or a reseller (think of a used record store but without the actual store), or a little of both.

People sell promos all the time. It would be easy to not understand the significance of it if you are not a GNR nut.

While I am skeptical that it would be worth a lot, I think a collector might have paid for it just for the status of owning something from the sessions. I think we can all agree that while we want to hear it, and it has some historical significance, it's a song we have heard already that we have multiple versions of.

i wouldn't have paid 75 dollars for it.

Are the grenade cover or the red hand cover worth something ?

I mean, what's $75 these days? I wouldn't pay $75 to hear another version of a CD song, but I could see the appeal for a collector who wants memorabilia from the CD sessions.

The alt-cover CDs are valuable because they only came out in limited numbers. I have no idea how much they sell for. It's like anything, baseball cards, action figures, etc. It's not really about the function of the item. People just want them because they are limited and have some kind of status within their chosen hobby or interest. If I ever bought one, I'd only do so knowing that crates of them could leak one day and the one I would own in this hypothetical might not end up being as exclusive if that happens.

I'm more of a quality over quantity guy. I have my ticket stub from seeing GNR in 2006, and I have that stupidly obnoxious Locked N' Loaded box set from when they were too cheap to pass up. I'm not the kind of person who would want a room full of GNR stuff, but I'd love to have at least one obscure thing from the CD sessions. So I get where the appeal comes where someone might want a promo disc, or an alt-cover.

There's technically no "real" physical copies of the grenade cd. (Yes, I know about the "copy" out there).
As far as the red hand, I got a copy of it in at amoeba here in los angeles for a $1.99 in the clearance area.
