Unreleased Chinese Democracy Era Songs Definitive List & Information

Bill Brasky

Well-known member
So since we didn't have this topic already, I figured we should have one and discuss what's left in the vault and all the completed songs post 93 (not including Sympathy For The Devil)

Information with factual evidence such as interviews, documents and images have been posted throughout this thread so far.

Of course there will be speculation and information from unnamed sources.

A thank to the folks at Gnr Evolution for Chinese Whispers
For there interview archive.
Zombux for his definitive studio session list

Let's start with CD II songs from that email and songs that have been released or leaked.

3. Atlas Shrugged (soon to be released)

4. Soul Monster

5. Silkworms (Absurd Released)

12. Perhaps (released)

13. Oh My God

15. Light My Fire (most likely a doors cover song)

Q: Axl, here's a list of rumored song titles. Can you tell us which ones are bogus and which ones are real?

Ides Of March ('98), Oklahoma ('98), Atlas Shrugged ('99), Closing In On You ('99), Cock-A-Roach Soup ('99), Friend Or Foe ('99), Hearts Get Killed ('99), No Love Remains ('99), Oh My God ('99), Something Always ('99), Suckerpunched ('99), Zip It ('99), Silkworms ('00), Down By The Ocean ('01), Leave Me Alone ('02), Seven ('02), The General ('02), Thyme ('02), Quick Song ('05), Zodiac ('05), Motormouth ('06), We Were Lying ('06)

A: Ides Of March, Oklahoma, Atlas Shrugged, Oh My God, Silkworms , Down By The Ocean (Izzy), Leave Me Alone, Seven , The General , Thyme , Quick Song , Zodiac Most all titles subject to change w/out warning and r considered working titles. (Axl Rose, chinesedemocracy.com, Dec. 2008)

So additional songs not in the supposed email track list are

16. Seven

17. Quick Song

18. Zodiac

19. State Of Grace

20. Ides Of March (most likely Circus Maximus)

21. Down By The Ocean - Izzy song.

22. Oklahoma/Berlin

23. Eye On You (sampled on Hardschool)

So gentleman that's 23 tracks.

Other titles such as The Rebel, Prom Violence, Curly Shuffle were on the village disc and Dragon which Rick claimed to have heard are also in the mix.

Latest Update on page 23 of this thread.

Ides Of March
Down By The Ocean

Was it ever confirmed Axl recorded vocals for these ones (besides the scat vocal track for Quick Song)? I vaguely recall Thyme and Ides Of March being touted as strictly instrumental sort of intro pieces, but I'm probably wrong.

Seven and Oklahoma/Berlin have vocals.

Q: [...] I am very excited about Seven. Can you tell us anything about this song? Is it a rocker?
A: ITS AN TIMELESS BALLAD WITH A BLOW YOUR FACE OFF CHORUS AND A SUCK YOUR BALL SACK BRIDGE!!!!! (Brain Mantia, Appetite for Discussion, Aug. 18, 2010)

"As the far as the songs go: 'Oklahoma' was pretty much written by the time they got to the studio. Axl wrote that with inspiration from the Oklahoma City bombing (more as a tribute to those who died, if I'm not mistaken). [...] (Dave Dominguez, Sp1at, 02/07/05)

Down By the Ocean most likely ended up as Box by Izzy Stradlin

Credit to @John Bonham for the video.

Per @ROSS TCB Box is not Down by the Ocean. Izzy confirmed on the old beenafix board that that album was written and recorded in 2006. I've been trying to dispel this fake news media for many years.

Ides Of March has been told me by a source that we will call source 1 is a instrumental.

I was also told that Monsters is not the same as what some who heard Soul Monster years before remembered hearing. This is separate source that we will call source 2.

Quick Song i have been told by another source that we will call source 3 is most hit sounding song from the cd era. They wouldn't confirm vocals but my assumption is the way they discuss confirms it.

Thyme could very well be a instrumental, the same with Tonto.

I have never come across any real info on those songs.

@DaddyDont @Slugworth @EstrangedTWAT @unlucky777 @Fearthejuggalo @deelowbrown @ROSS TCBchime in if you guys think i have anything not correct.

Blackstar and Zoombux please feel free to register a account here and join the discussion if @Gordon Comstock or @HGH could extended the invite ?

Shots were heard from the grassy knoll.

January 13, 2006: Axl attends a Korn tour launch party and talks to Rolling Stone. He mentions that they're working on 32 songs, and that 26 are nearly done. Of those, 13 are slated for the final album. Among Rose's favorites are "Better," "There Was a Time" and "The Blues."  He promises: "people will hear music this year."

In 2006

Of the 26 nearly finished songs 14 were on CD. They might have added TIL as track 14.

So there were 12 nearly finished songs left, I assume vocals.

So were there 12 songs with vocals left.

1. Hard Skool

2. Absurd

3. Perhaps

4. The General

5. Monsters

6. Atlas

7. Nothing

8. OMG

9. State of Grace

10. Quick Song

11. Eye on You

12. Seven

6 unfinished tracks to get to 32:

1. Ides of March/Circus Maximus instrumental on LL. Both titles reference Roman stuff death of Caesar or Roman chariot racing stadiums. Obviously not about a salad.

2. Monstrosity could be Me and My Elvis, Axl's description of Soul Monster in Chats sounded like Monsters in reference to the bridge. But he referenced Elvis and Monster of Soul. Which confused me to think Me and My Elvis was Soul Monster.
3. Oklahoma/Berlin - smoke of vocal no proof.

4. Zodiac - Instrumental

5. Cuban Skies?

6. Tonto or Light My Fire?

It works mathematically.

Could be anything from Locker Leaks but these are mentioned. Prom violence gets mentioned.

Thyme and Seven are Beltrami tracks. Brain described Seven as a real song.

but look at this quote knowing Seven was a Sample on Madagascar.

  • Axl Rose hired film composer Marco Beltrami to create the string arrangement. "I met with Axl, and he played me these songs, asked me my ideas about them, and I told him what I thought they needed," Beltrami said in an interview dated July 20, 2003. "They gave me four songs to orchestrate. A song called 'Seven,' which is the one I actually wrote a guitar part [on]. There was one called 'Thyme,' one called 'The General,' one called 'Leave Me Alone.'"

Beltrami added strings to tracks called Seven(Madagascar), Thyme (TWAT?), The General and Leave Me Alone (Monsters?).
So Seven is most likely Madagascar.

Thyme maybe an instrumental. But TWAT has Beltrami strings. So either way it's not 1 of 6 extra tracks they were working on.

Wasted you literally quoted a interview from Brain in 2010 after cd was released describing Seven then proceed to claim Seven is Madagascar which was was released in 2008 which is lunacy.

Either you're drunk (most likely) or your using a counter intelligence technique to throw people off the trail.

Tucker

the drug-fuelled rantings of a madman, thats what i get from those axl quotes

Beltrami is disinformation.

Brain does say TWAT was released and Seven was unreleased in that interview. So it can't be Madagascar.

Which means it's one of the 12 nearly finished songs in 2006 with vocals.

If they are holding back Monsters and timeless ballad Seven, makes me wonder what they are waiting for?

They've still got Atlas, Monsters and Seven to release.

Beltrami wrote a guitar part for Seven and he said it was the best song. But there's not much info on it and it hasn't leaked.

Richard Fortus used to have a website where you could download audio and one of them was called either Thyme or Tonto. I can't remember. But it was definitely one of the same titles of an unreleased GNR song for sure.

It likely had no connection at all to GNR and was just a coincidence. I used to have it on my old YouTube channel before Mojo took it down.

It sounded Hans Zimmer-esque iirc. Orchestral and electronic.

So since we didn't have this topic already, I figured we should have one and discuss what's left.

Here's the CD II songs from that email:

1.Cuban Skies

23.Oklahoma/Berlin

24.Eye On You (sampled on Hardschool)

So gentleman that's 24 tracks.

5 have been released / leaked in a final form Absurd, Hardschool, Perhaps,The General and Monsters.

So where down to 19 with Nothing and Atlas lined up to be released next.

Down to 17.

Omg aka Liars is also on the release schedule most likely with Monsters.

Down to 15.

4 Heavens , Down By The Ocean and Going Down are most likely never going to be released.

Down to 12.

Thoughts ? Opinions ?

Other titles such as The Rebel which was on the village disc and Dragon which Rick claimed to have heard are also in the mix.
I wonder what the chances are Slash/Duff re recorded them all back in 2019-2020, An album was supposedly done by then or maybe I’m just in the coco coco nest.

Btw a friend of the community that will not be named shared few months back that Nothin' will have more finished never before heard vocals from Axl I’m guessing 2002-2004 and then Duff recorded a new part which we have now from the rehearsal mix.

Light My Fire is a cover of The Doors song, right? Or, am I missing something obvious?

I am with @wasted - I think there are only a few songs left with vocals.

I'm not saying I agree with each and every point, but the math and logic checks out. 26 songs nearly done in 2006. 14 end up on CD. The leaked CD II track list has another 15. Of those 15, we've heard through leaks or releases 9 of them. 2 appear to be covers.

It makes sense to me that there are only a few songs left with vocals. That's not my hope, I hope he has more, but I doubt it would be the case.

I thought there were Reddit posts from fernando that the plan was to release recorded CD2 with Muff and slash in 2019/2020 and tour it but covid shit canned that plan.

It was Tonto. I lost the file years ago but from what I remember, it didn't sound like it fit the Village demo at all, very electronic.

Thyme is listed as "Thyme (P.R.L.)" and P.R.L. is listed as "P.R.L. w/out THYME (no gtrs)" on the Village discs.

Clearly it was meant as an intro for PRL - which was supposedly the title track for CD2 back in the early 2000s.

I just doubt much was done from 2006 to 2008 release in terms of new vocals aka finished songs.

But there's at least 12 more vocals excluding the 14 CD songs.

Maybe 14 if you add Going Down and Light My Fire.

But Axl did do Soul Monster/Monsters vocals in 2006 according to the Venomous christmas card/Bridge quote. So it's not like he wasn't in a studio

With those 12-14 they easy have CD II and there's enough substantial songs like Atlas, Perhaps, The General, Monsters, Seven to not have record or do more songs to make a viable album.

There's so much there anything is possible.

I hope for Circus Maximus or and Me and My Elvis but they seem like huge undertakings.

Oklahoma seems more likely to haveca vocal or throw a Rock the Rock on it. It's seems like a lay up for Slash to rework Oklahoma into a single.

One thing that makes me think that there isn't much out there is how everything that leaks or gets released is almost entirely something we've already heard in some form.

The General and Rock The Rock are the only two songs to come out of nowhere that we haven't heard in previous leaks (we heard Monsters in the Vienna clip, we just thought it was The General).

We know that there are vocals added to some of the instrumentals from the Village sessions, because he added vocals to Shacklers, Sorry, and Better. They were all instrumentals at the time. We also now know that Nothing has vocals, or at least, I hope it does and it isn't Duff singing lead, since the leak was only a scratch track.

If you look historically at Chinese Democracy, the core of the final tracklist was pretty much the same album as it was since 1999. CD, Madagascar, TWAT, the Blues, etc. So it wouldn't shock me if Axl had this mentality where CD II's tracklist was the tracklist, and as we've seen with recent songs, nothing is ever done, so it's the same core of songs.

In terms of the individual tracks, you always have to consider that State Of Grace could be one of the tracks we think that haven't heard, just with a different name.

The fact that they sampled vocals from Eye On You is pretty ridiculous. That is either a massive coincidence that they happened to sample vocals from one of the few songs we've heard, or it tells me that what we heard in the Village Sessions was a big chunk of his vocal output over the last 30 years to the point that they had to go and take a piece from Eye On You to complete another song.

I want to be wrong, and I hope there is a trilogy worth of albums, but everything points to there not being much near-completed. Near-completed being, songs that have Axl vocal tracks that aren't just scratch tracks.

I think people say album when they mean 3 records. 3 x 10 track records. When you hear the demo cds you think there must be enough for 3 albums here. If you start adding covers and do a few extra vocals. But it's 2 x 14 tracks cds.

The CD II tracklist is probably pretty set around the vocals and finished songs. I wonder if part of it is Axl just waiting for the music company to put out the songs. There's album of CD scope which is unreleased. We say there's not much but there's about 14 tracks with vocals.

Did Axl add vocals to a bunch of Bucket jams? It seems like that didn't happen.

Axl said CD II was "meaner, nastier" -

I think a lot of the songs we are getting now were too dark/ experimental for the CD /Best Buy deal. Silkworms was. A Reworked OMG isn't viable. Then Brain's jam songs The General and Seven aren't as GNR as the CD songs, they are almost rap songs. Monsters isn't as guitar based, it is a little weird sounding. Hard Skool has a Slash, Duff credit? Perhaps I was wrong doesn't fit the vibe of CD. Atlas according to Ron was meant to be on CD but it was too long to fit. TIL had a lot expectation around it.

Like you say there are the core songs they had played live and got good leak reaction like Better. Then they had things that Ron had worked on like Shackler's, Scraped and songs Bucket seemed to finish off like Sorry and ITW. Prostitute was something new and hyped up.

Another element is that each band member got their songs on CD. Pitman worked on Madagascar and ITW. Bucket got Shackler's and Scraped. Finck is Better, SOD and others. Brain got Prostitute on there. Tommy is on Riad and SOD. Fortus is on Better. Ron involved with Shacklers and Catcher. So everyone got represented. Even Dizzy.

It looks like some of the older songs like Silkworms, The General and OMG got replaced by more recently finished songs like Scraped, Sorry and Shacklers.

It does look like they had CD core songs but then switched Shackler's for OMG, Scraped for Silkworms, maybe TIL for Atlas, Sorry for The General. All stronger more Best Buy friendly. I wish The General was played over the Best Buy PA all day. Axl losing it on Monsters as someone checks out the fish on the flat screen tvs.

Some of songs are similar too.

HS sounded like Chindem 2

Shackler's is another version of Oh my God/Silkworms

Catcher, Perhaps, Atlas are a trilogy/Brian May - pick one.

State of Grace and IRS similar

Monsters is kind of like a weirder darker TWAT

Zodiac seems like an album closer to me.

There's a sort of inverted or double negative CD in the CD II tracks. A double cd might have worked.

So they kind of had a balance of tracks. Maybe Sorry is more of a single than The General.

Better fits production of CD more than Perhaps.
Catcher chosen over Atlas

ITW and Madagascar less out there than The General and Monsters

Scraped more single potential than Silkworms.

Prostitute good album closer.

CD II can be seen as like UYI II, just a little bit more experimental and out there than first album. HS, Perhaps, Monsters are more hard rock sounding and maybe didn't fit well with CD production.

This is problem or it is for me. I literally was talking on sheeeit radio not to long ago about PRL which was supposed to be the name of cd2 back in the day.

@wasted you probably remember the episode.

We are getting older gentleman. Our minds have a lot of information in them by it slips away with time.

Most of the hoarders/ people who know shit were older gnr fans from when gnr was big in the late 80's Robert John being a good example.

The younger generation of hoarders/ people who know shit are in their 40's and 50's.

They're exceptions to that but not many.

I really think we can narrow down the last remaining songs.

I thought there were Reddit posts from fernando that the plan was to release recorded CD2 with Muff and slash in 2019/2020 and tour it but covid shit canned that plan.
It wasn't reddit post it was conversations Fernando had with people in the community.

The village sessions disc that leaked (i believe there were more) that Rick never got. Really emptied out a lot of the vault. Plus the attention it got and universal fire ect... has made trading or selling a very small selective market which then would naturally result in less leaks.

Btw sorry for forgetting to@gunsntortillas above when i was asking people to chime in. you're a incredibly knowledgeable poster.
