The Eternal General - 04/24 - Unpinned but alive; Atlas/Monsters nowhere in sight; Slash 'Orgy of the Damned' next month

I like CD a lot, The Replacements "Let It Be" is one of the best albums of all time, "Oh My God" is criminally underrated, and so is Robin Finch.

I get it, AFD is a masterpiece but the magic was gone by 1990 anyway.

I also like CD and Robin Finck is a great guitarist in the studio. He did play Slurp’s solos a bit sloppy live (November Rain especially, though it didn’t sound too horrible besides the 2nd half of the 2nd solo) but better than Slurp wanking whatever on the places where his solos should be. OMG is a meh song though

Robin was the Izzy of New GNR, don’t like him all you like, but an essential piece of the puzzle. He got jobbed by the Rose-ster brothers.

Most of the guys from the ''freaks era'' were talented. The problem is Rose couldn't be bothered to release new music so they all gradually got sick and quit. Then Rose grew a porno moustache and ''went Vegas''.

If the band want to be cunts why bother releasing the song at all?. They could just release perhaps and in addition to the vinyl add any 2 or 3 live tracks that have been played during previous tours.
UMG Italy has removed the line about vinyl exclusive.

I'm sticking with my theory that the only reason they're unloading The General like this is to symbolize the end of the Chinese era and as a thank you to hardcores for sticking it out.

I'm hoping for one more 1-2 punch (Oklahoma) but I think it's over.

I'll give Diff credit for actually having a signature sound and memorable bass lines back in the GNFNR days
He still has a signature sound, one of the most distinctive.

Within a nanosecond on Hard School you can tell it's him.

It faded with the Ashba era. Even the most Jarmo-esque of Jarmos is going to struggle to defend the moustache era.
That was a nightmare. 2009-14 is the dream season on Dallas... but worse. Much worse.

There was a certain GN'R fan who'd list CD as their favourite album and 'Oh My God' as their second favourite song behind 'Estranged'. They'd also like The Replacements and Robin would be their ''favourite Guns N' Roses guitarist''.

My favorite and I still laugh..wish I could find the posts...were the people saying right after CD's release that the album had the greatest production in history. :Classic_Troll:

It's not even the best produced GNR album! In fact, it's the worst!

Axl and the entire production/engineering crew didn't even know how to properly insert the new additions into the songs.

This is how you paste musicians into an older demo/song:

Pure hogwash.

Nobody in that lineup (2000-06) was used properly, studio or live.

Buckethead as stunt player was idiotic. In a live setting, Bucket should've had most(all) of the leads on the classic material while Finck and the rotating 3rd unnecessary wheel are on rhythm.

One of the non-Bucket guitarists should've been dropped. Once Tobias tapped out, don't even call Fortus.

The drummer studio situation absurd. Frank never should've been anything more than a touring member. I love Brain but it was already absurd having him copy Freese.

Same with Ron. Shouldn't have been within a light year of a studio.

Tommy did a pretty damn good job on certain songs(IRS, Riad, etc) but it didn't matter because they were going to bury him to the point it makes Jason Newstead sound like Billy Sheehan.

I now think this answers the old question about why were they always stuck on the same songs no matter how much time transpired.

They finally caught on to the fact he was just going to sit on all the material indefinitely and they weren't going to throw their music into a black hole anymore.

The moment when it goes tits up in 2002 and of course RTB it was a sign to get another creative spurt going and see what happens. Maybe they strike gold, whip up some killer shit, label gets interested, and the previous material can be used as B sides or a follow-up.

Didn't happen. Wasn't even attempted. In 2003 he started adding vocals to already finished and ready to go instrumentals.

Oh god I'd forgotten about Bridge School.

"Yeehaw" - Axl's intro to Your Crazy in front of a gang of dribbling retard kids.

Rock N'Roll!

I'm surprised drunk Tommy didn't punch one of the kids in the face.

The last time he could sing and looked cool was 2006-07 and I saw this tour and he was good. So the rot occurs sometime after 2007 and before 2009 meaning 2008 is the pivotal year and Ashba the pivotal person.

I remember the forum view on Rose was that he was this mad genius adding overdubs to a trilogy of ''NINesque meets Pink Floyd'' albums. This was literally the prevalent view 1999 - 2007ish! Wasted can confirm this as Wasted loves a good Chinese Democracy discussion and we discussed this a lot.

And I came to the conclusion that the CD stuff, including the stuff in the can, simply wasn't good enough. Rose probably realised this at an early date hence the tinkering and finally the shelving of the stuff. He spent years messing around with songs that simply were not that good before saying ''sod it'' and cashing in.

rose didn't have a story, he had nothing to say with cd. it was meaningless. that's the biggest offence of that album. what is it even about, and why should i care?

i know what appetite was about. it was about the fun of a rock n roll lifestyle. a fantasy about life on the streets. appealing.

lies expanded on that image. reckless life kicked off that album and you knew what it was about. one in a million was extremely bold and honest. truly, an example of an artist having something to say, something thought provoking.

the UYI's were more political satire and social commentary in general, mocking mainstream press and politics. And they mostly succeeded in bringing that message.

spaghetti incident was a lot more meaningless, since it were songs from other artists. But a fun listen nonetheless.

Now then, CD; I repeat the question: what is it even about? it's about Axl making "the best album ever" and all it ends up is making him look like a prat. To make matters worse, the lack of message and meaning is not compensated with a pleasant listening experience. It's an exercise in dissecting song structure and hidden musical lines, but there really is no point. It's complexity for the sake of complexity, that's all there is to it. It's not something like brian wilson's "smile" album where complexity has a purpose and meaning. It's directionless complexity, and extremely suffocating.

the new singles still don't have a very interesting message, but at least the songs are fun this time around. so they're half good I guess.
